New Mersey Ferry
Here’s a first look at the new Mersey Ferry, due to be on the water early 2026.
Making the announcement, Mayor Rotheram said that the multimillion project will “ensure that the iconic Ferry Cross the Mersey will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.”
The new ferry is being designed and constructed on the banks of the River Mersey by Birkenhead shipbuilder Cammell Laird.
Marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the iconic ferries, which have been sailing on the River Mersey for more than 800 years.

With stylish interiors and bright, open plan spaces, the fully accessible ferry will be the perfect way to explore the City Region and take in the unrivalled views the Mersey Ferry offers as well as a unique venue for weddings, parties and corporate events.

The new plans honour the rich heritage of the Mersey Ferries, with the exterior design retaining the traditional livery and colours of the historic fleet, while the interiors boast a stylish, contemporary theme. The purpose-built, fully accessible vessel will feature flexible event spaces as well as bars and bike storage. With warm tones and thick fabrics, it will offer a new level of comfort for the world-famous Mersey Ferries while securing the service for future generations.
The latest designs, including a virtual tour of the Mersey Ferry, allows visitors to explore the lower and upper decks, while gaining a feel for its stylish interiors is available online and will be showcased in a ‘Future of the Ferries’ display at Seacombe Terminal for the duration of the build.
