What is a Digital Champion?

Digital Champions offer advice, information and support to adults who want to go online and learn how to use a digital device (e.g. computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile) for the first time or improve their confidence with the basics.

  • You don’t have to be an IT whizz to be a Digital Champion – you just need some basic digital skills, a bit of spare time, and an enthusiasm to support others. As a Digital Champion you will support others to learn the basics about digital devices and the internet in a relaxed, informal environment.

    Why become a Digital Champion?

There are a number of benefits to becoming a Digital Champion:

    • Giving something back to your local community.
    • Improving your own knowledge and confidence of using digital devices and the internet.
    • Gaining valuable experience and organisational skills, which can help build your CV.
    • Getting involved in new projects and organisations can open up other opportunities for volunteering and employment.
    • Meeting other Digital Champions and make new local connections.

How do Digital Champions help people?

Helping others with their digital skills takes many forms, but it could include:

    • Helping someone learn the basics, e.g. showing them how to use Google, a mouse and keyboard or set up an email account.
    • Helping someone understand the benefits of getting online, e.g. showing them how to search or apply for jobs, shopping and banking or using Skype or Zoom to connect with family and friends.
    • Being as an advocate of the benefits of being online.
    • Assisting training providers during sessions by giving extra support to learners, and supporting people during IT open-access drop-ins.
